In July 2020 “Steven” got in touch with me via phone to discuss various experiences he has had and his views on them.

Communion

In February 1987 American experiencer Whitley Strieber released the well known book “Communion”. The book went into his contact experiences in depth. At the time Steven was 16 years old.

He vividly remembers walking into a local book shop and seeing a rack covered in the book. On the cover of the book was one of the Grey beings which Whitley had previously encountered on numerous occasions. The rack was like a “wall of faces”.

 When Steven saw the books he immediately froze to the spot. Something immediately felt familiar to him, like a subconscious recognition. There was no memory of anything having actually taken place, but he had a very strong feeling that he knew these beings.

He stood there almost paralyzed for about 20 seconds. Eventually the shock at seeing the books subsided. He felt drawn to read the book to see whether that would shed some light on how he had reacted. This led to a general interest in the contact phenomenon.

It should be noted that Steven’s claims are far from individual. The cover of Communion is famous for triggering memories or general feelings of unease with experiencers.

Malevolent Presence

In 1996 Steven was in his final year at Portsmouth University and staying in a share house. Around this time of his life he suffered from sleep paralysis quite regularly. One night he had a particularly vivid and disturbing experience which felt quite different to usual.

He was in bed when he began became aware that he was asleep. As he became aware of this fact, he then started to feel the sense of an evil presence downstairs. He sensed this presence begin to come up the stairs and move along the landing. He then sensed the door to his bedroom opening and it enter the room. Next he felt the bed sheets over him start to lift. At this moment he jolted out of dream-state and woke completely up.

Immediately the sense of a presence vanished. He got out of bed and searched the house but there was nothing there. Eventually he calmed down and went back off to sleep.

Looking back at the incident Steven believes that it may have been caused by a particularly upsetting lucid dream. He says that the previous evening he had been watching a documentary about a choir master who had committed some horrendous crimes. He believes that this documentary was weighing heavily on his mind, which manifested in this vivid dream. I agree that this is the most probable explanation for what happened.

Grey Visitation

By the spring of 1999 Steven had married and moved to Thailand. He shared a secluded wooden house with his wife, about 100 metres away from a main road.

One morning he woke up with an odd feeling that something had gone on in the night. Before he mentioned anything his wife turned to him and asked who the two little men were that had been there during the night.

Immediately a flashback of what had taken place came flooding back to him. He was standing next to the bed with a Grey standing at each of his sides. They looked identical to one another and were about 3.5 – 4 feet tall. He was staring down at his wife thinking to himself “What have you got yourself into being with me?”

He had no idea what happened after this point. It is very possible that he was taken but had the memories of this blanked out.

Turned Around

In late 2002 – early 2003 when he was 31 years old Steven arranged for a holiday to the UK. During this trip he visited his mother at her house in York. In the middle of the night he awoke for no apparent reason. He decided to get out of bed and walk around a while to settle back down. While pacing back and forth he decided to look out of the window.

Suddenly he saw a white light shine directly at him. He then felt like he briefly blacked out. He came around to find himself still standing up but facing the other direction. He had no idea of how long had gone on, at the time it felt near instantaneous.

Looking back at the incident he wonders if what happened was down to a medical issue, or whether he had been abducted before being put back the other way around with the memories removed. He did not think to check a clock at the time so has no way of knowing whether a longer period of time had passed or not.

Hyperconciousness

In 2007 Steven felt like he was having numerous contact experiences. He could not remember any details, but was just aware that something was going on, a feeling he refers to as “hyperconsciousness”. Sometimes he would try his best to recollect things, other times he would push these thoughts to the back of his mind and get on with his daily life.

As he could not remember any details around this time he does wonder if this was just paranoia brought on by things he was reading about the contact phenomenon rather than actual experiences he was having.

Bicycle Shed

The only other occasion Steven recalls anything odd going on was on another visit to his mother’s house in York. He had gone to sleep like normal. However, he then had a vivid memory of waking up to find himself standing in the pouring rain with no idea how he had got there.

He was standing down the end of the long back garden next to the bicycle shed. He did not recall walking back into the house and returning to his bed so is unsure whether this actually took place or was just a dream. All he knows is that in the morning there was no sign that he had been rained on in the night.

Conclusions

Steven’s most compelling incident was the Grey visitation that he remembered and which his wife also made mention of. The fact that she independently recollected seeing the beings next to him in the night means that this cannot have just been a vivid dream. This incident alone confirms that he is a contactee.

His other experiences are harder to verify, especially due to the fact that he has experienced sleep disorders such as sleep paralysis and lucid dreaming, and also the fact that he has looked into the contact phenomenon. While they may be related, some of them could have more mundane explanations.

Steven confirmed that his daughter has also had experiences including UFO sightings and paranormal activity. However, he did not go into details of these incidents.
