Birmingham UFO Group Case Report

In late June 2026 I was contacted on phone by an elderly man who I shall name “Derek”. He wanted to discuss a disturbing incident which happened to him in late 2018 in his own home. After finding out that he lived in Olton, Birmingham I arranged to drive over in the evening to discuss what took place face-to-face. I took with me a voice recorder app on my mobile phone which I used to document the incident.
This case report discusses the incident in depth, along with another potentially paranormal incident from Derek’s childhood.
The Blue Veil
Derek grew up in Dublin in a house on Kilmainham Lane, in the vicinity of Kilmainham Gaol. Between the lane and the River Liffey was an area of open fields. The gaol still exists as a tourist attraction, but the fields have now been built over with housing.
In 1956 when he was 9 years old he and his friends used to play around an area they referred to as “The Hollow”. This was a large field with an embankment which led down to the river.
One day they were out at The Hollow playing hide and seek. On the embankment was a telegraph pole. Part of the base of it had been left unfilled, which created a great hiding place. Derek decided to hide inside the hole.
While his friend looked for him he suddenly felt something was behind him. He looked over his shoulder and saw what looked like a dark blue coloured veil. Back then he and his friends believed in Banshees, female spirits from Irish folklore.
Thinking that there was a Banshee standing right behind him he was terrified. He jumped out of the hole and ran away without looking back!
When he got back home he told his family what he’d seen. They told him that it must have been his imagination and it could have been anything.
Beings Visitation
On the first week of December in 2018 Derek was relaxing in his home on Howard Road, Olton, Birmingham.
It was a very cold evening. He decided to head upstairs to bed between 11:15-11:30pm, the usual time he would tend to go to sleep.
He got into his bed, and stretched his feet out to warm up the bottom of the bed. He lay there for a short while, up to half an hour, and believes he may have dropped off.
Suddenly he woke back up to the feeling of something on top of the bed covers. It felt similar to the paw of a cat dragging the area of his stomach, but seemed too large and heavy for a cat. He quickly came to the realisation that he didn’t own a pet cat. Immediately he thought to himself “There’s somebody in my room!” Then he thought “Don’t jump up now. If you jump up and get a crack on the head that’s me finished!”
He lay there with his eyes closed pretending to be asleep. He felt whatever it was move down the bed. There seemed to be quite a lot of movement and he thought to himself “Is there one or two?” It got to the end of the bed near the far right corner. He thought “There’s two of them, I’m sure.”
Derek suddenly felt the sensation of a long thin arm drop across his lower legs. It felt as if it was about two foot in length. At this point he opened his eyes. It was quite dark in the room. Still believing there were two burglars in his room he thought to himself “Keep quiet, play dead, because if I jump up and one of them hits me on the head I’m finished!”
He felt one of the two figures move around the right side of the bed. They bumped into the side of the bed as they did and he thought “That’s very clumsy considering they are robbing the place!” He glanced over at the bedroom door to the left of the bed and realised that it was closed. Upon seeing this he thought “That’s funny, you think they’d leave the door open.”
He then felt the figure continue up the side of the bed until it was right beside him. He thought “God that’s been there for about two minutes. What’s going on?” Then he felt it go back down the side of the bed, again bumping into it as it went.
Derek used to have a cabinet near the end of the bed and he thought they would no doubt go through that to see if there was any money in it. He knew that there was nothing of value in it, just some family photographs. He hoped that they would look through the cabinet, realise there was nothing there and leave.
He felt a small vibration which he assumed was the burglars pulling one of the drawers out to take a look. He then felt something walk across the foot of the bed from left to right heading towards the bedroom wardrobe. Again he knew that there was nothing of value in there either.
It went quiet and for a moment Derek thought that they had left. Suddenly he felt the sensation of two figures banging their arms up and down on the right end of the bed. He did not look at them, but got the sense that they were short like children.
He thought to himself “What’s going on? I’ve gone barmy here.” But the feeling of the two figures banging their arms of the bed continued. He also sensed that there was a third taller figure standing at the lower left of the bed.
Derek tried to move his legs and arms and realised that he seemed to be paralyzed. He was only able to move his eyes. In his mind he questioned himself, asking “If I put my hands up and wave will they stop and go?” But then he thought “No, I don’t want to frighten them. Don’t jump up, just steady on now!”
All of a sudden a strong wave of calmness came over him. Derek describes it as “total serenity, absolutely calm, as if I was floating.” At this stage Derek assumed that the tall figure at the left could read his mind, and had telepathically calmed him down because he was getting frightened of what was happening.
He then felt one of the shorter figures get up onto the bed and sit right almost on top of his right leg, pressed up against it. Whatever was on him had a smooth but bubbly texture to it. It did not feel particularly heavy, which further cemented the idea that it was short in stature.
Derek glanced to his left at the door again to confirm it was still closed. He moved his eyes slowly around, surveying the darkened bedroom. This is where he saw the taller figure for the first time. It was standing still near the foot of the bed.
Due to gaps in the blinds and street lights outside on the road it was light enough in the room to make out some details. The figure was about six and a half feet in height with squared off shoulders. It appeared to have a covering over his face similar to a balaclava. At the base of this was a shiny metallic strip. He realised at this point that this figure did not appear to be human. He assumed that this also applied to the shorter figures he had not seen.
Despite this realisation, the feeling of relaxation continued. He then felt one of the shorter beings begin to move. It began walking up the right side of the bed. It got to about two feet up and suddenly stopped. Derek realised the position it had halted was directly opposite the tall mirror on the wardrobe. He wondered if it had been startled by seeing its own reflection in the mirror, although this would of course just be speculation.
Derek then felt the taller being kneel on the lower left corner of the bed, depressing the mattress significantly. It then stretched across the bed over his lower body to reach the shorter being on the right. He thought about his daughter “Anna” sleeping in the other bedroom. He thought to himself “Sorry Anna, I’ve got to do this. I’ve got to get up. I’ve got to find out what’s going on.”
He managed to break past the feeling of paralysis and sat up in the bed, with the taller being still leaning across him. It was hard to see due to the low light in the room, it just looked like a large black shape. He reached out his hand and touched the upper back of it. It felt like fabric of some kind, with small tassels hanging off the base of it. It reminded him of the feeling of an old fashioned sofa.
He ran his hand down the back of the being. After about a foot the sensation became extremely smooth, like touching the metal bonnet of a car. It was gradually curved in shape, with it curving more predominantly near the base of its back. On the near side was what felt like a concave indentation, roughly 2 inches across, running all the way down. Derek felt that he was touching some kind of suit the being was wearing rather than its skin.
He believes that the taller being must have felt awkward lying across him, as it then seemed to reverse. As it did so it reached out and touched him on the forehead, and he immediately blacked out.
When he woke back up he did not open his eyes straight away. He remembered what had happened and was still frightened by it. He opened his eyes and found it was now light. He looked to his left and saw that the door was closed.
He tried to move the bed covers down to sit up, but realised they were tucked in. This was an anomaly as they had not been tucked in when the beings were present in the room. Derek says that he never tucks his bed covers in when he goes to bed. He thought to himself “Surely they didn’t tuck me in!”
He forcefully pulled the bed covers down to free them, then got up. He had a look around the room. Nothing appeared out of place. He felt the position on his forehead where the being had touched him. It felt different to the surrounding skin, although no obvious marking was visible.
Later on he tried kneeling on the lower left corner of his bed. He was around 12 stone at the time. By the amount he depressed the mattress he felt that the taller being must have been between 14-15 stone. Within days of the incident Derek informed Shelly about what had taken place.
Derek informed me that this incident has haunted him ever since. He mentioned that he doesn’t drink, smoke or use drugs of any kind, and that he was certain that he was fully awake at the time. He also informed me that the position on his forehead which the being touched still feels different to him, although there is nothing obviously visible.
About a year after the incident he developed a red rash on the back of his right shoulder. He went to speak with his GP about it. They told him that the most likely cause of it was a fungal infection and advised him to put cream on it. However, the rash has never disappeared and is still present today:
Derek feels that the rash may be an after effect of the experience, although he of course has no proof of this.
Around November 2025 he was watching an episode of a TV series on UFOs. He cannot remember the name of the show but thinks it may have had the word “encounter” in it. In the episode a case was discussed from 1953 which involved a doctor and his daughter. They were out cycling when they saw some shiny objects in a field they were passing. They stopped cycling and went towards them. They realised that what was shining was two reflective disc-shaped objects. To the right was two beings standing close to the fence.
The TV show displayed a drawing of what they reported seeing. Derek went cold. The beings the two witnesses described seeing looked the same as the tall being he had seen back in 2019! He rang Shelly up to tell her what he had just seen.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to track down this particular case online, and am not aware of it being mentioned in any books I have read. If you know which case this refers to please get in touch.
Conclusions
While the Banshee sighting from his childhood may well have had a mundane explanation due to his young age and the fact that he didn’t see it clearly for any length of time, the visitation in 2019 is fascinating and much more compelling.
The beings Derek both saw and sensed remained in the room for an extensive period of time. One possible explanation for what happened certainly worth considering is that the entire incident was caused by what is known as sleep paralysis. This is where the muscles of the body shut down while the individual is not fully asleep. In this scenario it is possible to see unusual figures in the room, other visual anomalies, hear strange sounds, feel vibrations or your body being pulled in odd directions.
Derek did indeed feel that he was largely paralysed for an extensive part of the experience. However, there are a number of aspects which suggest that the incident physically took place. Firstly, at numerous points during the experience he felt the beings hit or climb onto the bed depressing the mattress. He was not paralysed for the whole experience. Usually when people come out of paralysis any visual or audial anomalies immediately vanish. However, after he sat up the tall being was still present leaning right over him. He was able to actually touch its clothing and feel the weight of it before it touched him on the head and he blacked out.
I have dealt with a number of other contact cases where beings have touched people on the forehead leading to them blacking out, sometimes with an instrument, sometimes not. The tall being he described seeing certainly sounded unusual, or was at least wearing unusual clothing. However, the TV programme Derek watched in late 2025 apparently proved that the being he observed was not unique and had been reported before.
The two short beings that Derek sensed in the room may well have been Greys. These are often reported as being around 4 foot in height. Although he did not witness them directly, he did feel one of them put its arm over his lower legs. He said the arm was very slender and long, which again would fit in with the common description of a Grey.
Lastly there is the fact that when he came round in the morning he found that the edges of the bed covers were tucked in. He assured me that this was not something he would have done himself, either consciously or in his sleep. This is yet another anomaly which suggests that something may have actually taken place.
I do not believe the rash on Derek’s shoulder to be significant. Due to the fact that it developed a good while after the incident I find it unlikely it has anything to do with his experience.
